UNIDO General Conference emphasizes inclusive and sustainable industrial development

The fifteenth session of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) General Conference is currently under way in Lima, Peru. The General Conference is UNIDO’s supreme policymaking organ, in which all member states meet biennially to determine the guiding principles and policies of the Organization, and approve the budget and work programme of UNIDO.

A milestone achievement was reached on the first day of the Conference, with the adoption of the ‘Lima Declaration’, charting the Organization’s development priorities for the coming years and placing special emphasis on inclusive and sustainable industrial development.

The second day of the Conference featured a panel discussion on Green Industry and sustainable development, underlining the distinct role which a Green Industry approach to manufacturing plays in promoting inclusive and sustainable industrial development globally.

UNIDO’s Director General and Chairperson of the Green Industry Platform, Mr. LI Yong, explained to the plenary that, “UNIDO has done a lot to convene the right partners and governments to exchange knowledge in all fields of industrialization, be it for the development of agro-industries; for ensuring a better energy future; for advancing green industries; or for advancing the specific industrial agenda of groups of countries with similar interests and needs.”

He added that, “All these conferences and platforms have resulted in important programmes and partnerships. They have supported knowledge exchange and technology transfer.”

“A prime example is UNIDO’s Green Industry Platform that convenes hundreds of companies, organizations and governments in a learning network,” LI said.
