The second annual International Conference on Sustainable Development Practice was held at Columbia University in New York from 17 to 18 September 2014, in the run-up to the 69th Session of the United Nations General Assembly. The conference, organized by the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (UN SDSN), took place under the banner: “Advancing Evidence-Based Solutions for the Post-2015 Sustainable Development Agenda” and sought to identify practical solutions to address the complex challenges of sustainable development at the local, regional, and global levels.

Organized in 12 thematic sessions, ranging from “Poverty Reduction and Peace-Building in Fragile Regions” to “Redefining the Role of Business for Sustainable Development”, over 130 speakers outlined practical solutions from research, policy, development practice and business to address some of the most pressing sustainable development challenges of our time.

As part of the solutions presented, the Green Industry Initiative and Platform were showcased under the theme “Low-Carbon Energy and Sustainable Industry” as a clear pathway by which to effect a decoupling of economic growth from unsustainable resource use and negative environmental impacts. Concrete and measurable results from the joint UNIDO-UNEP Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production (RECP) programme were presented as clear indications of the development possibilities inherent in a consistently applied approach to sustainable manufacturing in select industrial sectors. The Green Industry Platform, the global RECP network and eco-industrial parks were highlighted as means to mainstream and scale up these successes on a global level.
